Welcome to LAB RATS!
ILA is excited to announce our 2025 series of hands-on workshops with a focus on creative tech, shared learning and interdisciplinary collaboration.

-------------------------------

This Lab Rats workshop explores how sound can actively generate and structure performance—not as background or atmosphere, but as a compositional and dramaturgical force. Through a series of embodied listening tasks, sound memory exercises, spatial reconstruction, and movement-text improvisations, participants will engage with the ways sound shapes attention, evokes memory, and interacts with the body in time and space. Rather than adding sound to an already-formed performance, we will investigate how performance might emerge from sound.

This approach will be of interest to artists who are seeking alternative ways to construct meaning in performance—through rhythm, delay, repetition, and fragmentation, rather than through traditional narrative or choreography.
The workshop welcomes participants interested in theatre, performance, dance, movement, and sound design. Whether you work with dance, acting, devised performance, or dramaturgy, you are invited to explore how sound can become a thinking tool and generative structure in your creative process.

Who is Li Yun?
Director, Sound Designer, and Scenographer
Li Yun is a Taiwanese director and sound/scenographic artist whose work integrates theater, sound installation, video, and spatial design. His practice focuses on the entanglement of memory, body, and history, often investigating the postcolonial legacies of migration and labor in Asia. Through an aesthetic rooted in material resonance and sonic presence, Li transforms performance and exhibition spaces into rituals of historical summoning.

His recent works explore sound as a site of historical tension—using voice, archival recordings, and environmental acoustics to evoke spectral presences and reconfigure collective memory. Rather than staging narratives, his creations function as perceptual frameworks that invite audiences to inhabit the fragile thresholds between presence and absence.
Li’s scenographic language dissolves the boundary between viewer and space, crafting environments where bodies, objects, and echoes converge to form a critical and affective encounter with the past.
